1st step of going abroad

Finding the right family

Private or agency?

Finding the right family is tricky, but the major step to a great au pair experience. So we try to help you to find out, if an agency or a private search is the right way for you to find your matching hostfamily.

Agency
private
Costs: an agency might charge , depending on the season, between 600 € and 1100 €

Family offers: The offer is in general limited, as families have to pay high fees to the agencies and choose a private way. Families contact you, if they are interested, you can’t contact them.

Visa: You have to organize it yourself, the agency just gives you the link for the online application.

Flight: The agencys in general offer to book your flight, which you pay separately. You have no influence on the price

Arrival: Some agencies offer a welcome package in your new home country after your arrival, such as general information courses ad overnight stays in hostels.

Rules: Families have to stick to certain rules, such as giving you your own bedroom and how much they have to pay you. These are rules that should be obvious in a healthy au pair – family relationship.

Worst case: You are in your family and it doesn’t work out. Usually you have to stay two more weeks in your family from the day on you decided to leave, if the family doesn’t want to end your placement straight away. Otherwise the family has to pay for a hostel for you for two weeks.

Finding a new placement: The agency offers you new families, BUT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE, THAT YOU WILL FIND A NEW ONE, as there is not a big variety and you might end up doing work and travel or even have to go home.
Costs: private platforms are in general free (for example “aupair-world.com”)
Some charge registration fees as 20€

Family offers: online platforms have a huge variety of families, with different interests and needs, just as you. Both – families and future au pairs can apply for each other.

Visa: You have to organize it yourself

Flight: As you have the control about your booking, you can find the cheapest offer, but we recommend to book the flight trough an travel agency

Arrival: You should book a hostel for your first night, if your new family can’t pick you up, from home. It makes it easier and you can get over your Jetlack. But most of the families pick you up from the Airport with Welcome signs which is very cute and an awesome start

Rules: Neither you nor the families have to stick to certain rules, but if you make certain things already clear (money, hours, days off, expectations) before your trip, there should be no problems about that, because both families and au pair are looking for a good match.

Worst case: You are in your family and it doesn’t work out. The families don’t have to offer you a place to stay until you find a new family. But you also don’t have to stay if you really want to leave.

Finding a new placement: You create a new profile online and start your search again, there are a lot of families looking for au pairs ASAP and it is an advantage that you are already in the country.
